Last month we had the absolute pleasure of welcoming the legendary Moroccan Gnawa musician Simo Lagnawi.
Gnawa music
Gnawa is a style of religious music that originated in Morocco. You can hear this in the music; the distinctive sound of the guembri playing repeated, chant-like phrases that moved us all into a trance-like state. Traditionally, the music is combined with dance moves like those in the video above.
Simo Lagnawi
Simo Lagnawi moved to London in 2008, and has since established himself as the UK’s leading Guembri player. As well as playing Gnawa, he is a member of crossover groups such as Electric Jalaba and the Gnawa Blues All-Stars.
